Wornall/Majors House Museums is pleased to announce the relaunch of Slavery on the Western Border, an online database dedicated to preserving and sharing the names of people enslaved in Jackson County. In 1860, enslaved individuals made up 17% of the county’s population, yet their names are often missing from the historical record. This database helps correct that gap.
The relaunch includes 100 newly added documents, with more to come, including additions of materials from the Black Archives of Mid-America.
This resource is intended for researchers, families tracing ancestry, educators, and anyone seeking a more complete understanding of slavery’s presence and impact along the Missouri–Kansas border. As the collection continues to grow, so too does our ability to honor and remember those whose lives were too often erased from official histories.
