History Field Trips Tailored to Your Needs
Each year, hundreds of students from across Kansas City participate in immersive field trips with the Wornall/Majors House Museums. We offer both on-site and to-go field trip options, bringing our experience directly to your location. From Civil War history and the legacy of enslavement in Jackson County to guided house tours and hands-on activities, WMHM customizes field trips for students of all grade levels.
About Field Trips
Field trips at Wornall/Majors House Museums offer customizable experiences, with our staff collaborating closely with teachers to create meaningful visits for students. Whether you have a specific content area to cover, a state standard to meet, or prefer the museum to handle most of the planning, WMHM is here to assist. Our field trips are interactive experiences that encourage students to deeply engage with history.

Field Trip Experiences at WMHM
The John Wornall House, built in 1858, was used as a field hospital during the Battle of Westport by both Confederate and Union soldiers. Students will learn about the Wornall family and how their lives were shaped by the Civil War, hear about the daily life of a Civil War soldier, and examine artifacts and learn to make inferences and draw conclusions
Ideal for classrooms that are looking for a more general glimpse into the past, our “Daily Life in the Nineteenth Century” field trip explores the lives of the Wornall or Majors family and how they interacted with their home spaces and objects inside of them.
Alexander Majors ran a shipping empire. Briefly, the company he co-owned held a near-monopoly on government freighting west of the Mississippi River. Through Majors’ story, learn about how people traveled and communicated across the “wild” west.
Both the Wornall and Majors families forced enslaved people to work on the estates. Students touring our properties on their field trips in Kansas City can learn about the lives of those who were enslaved and their roles on each property.
