“Wholesale Capture of Slaves From Abolition Negro Stealers”

Description
The Westport Border Star reports on the capture of fourteen escaped slaves just outside of Lawrence, Kansas. The report states that the escapees were armed and would have “made a deathly resistence,” but the white conductors surrendered. The white men were John Doye, Charles Doye, and Mr. Clough. There are significant details of those who escaped, including physical details and the name and location of their enslavers. There were also 2 free black men in the party, Wilson Hays and Charles Smith.
