“How Kansas City Absorbed Its Parent Town”
Jackson County MO
January 2, 1922
Description
An article in the Kansas City Journal alleging to reproduce part of Isaac McCoy’s will. It tells of purchasing an enslaved woman named Chainy in order to save her from being sold in New Orleans. McCoy claims to be “averse to holding a slave as property” and that by purchasing her, he was advancing her the money of her own purchase. He willed Chainy to his wife Christiana, until Chainy could repay the cost of her purchase, $415, with 6 percent interest. There is no record of if Chainy was ever freed, and the anecdote is recorded as an example of McCoy’s “generous compassion.”
