Bill of Sale: Sally Irwin to Samuel M. Parker
Jackson County MO, Independence MO
May 14, 1958
Description
Sally Irwin sells an enslaved boy named Enoch (aged 9, “of black color”) to Samuel M. Parker for $300. According to a note, there were two Sally Irwins living in Independence at the time, but it was clear that Samuel M. Parker was the brother of Mrs. Schuyler Love and a wagon master who died on the plains in 1864. Enoch Irwin still lived in Independence in 1911 when the Bill of Sale was recorded in the Jackson County Examiner and lived at 909 West Electric Street. He lives “in good circumstances,” works as a “house man” to a Mr. Zick for the last 6 years, and is also referred to as “Uncle Enoch.” He told the Enquirer that was was born on a farm 3 miles east of Independence on Lexington Road (later known as the Pugsley Place). After being sold to Parker, he was enslaved there until Emancipation. For the rest of the Civil War, he worked for Dr. Leo Twyman at Twyman Hotel on North Main Street before working for Preston Roberts and his family for 39 years. He owns property worth “several thousand of dollars” and lives with his sister Mary Irwin (1910-08-05).
